Not long after announcing that Mattia Binotto will join Sauber (from 2026 Audi) as COO and CTO, Audi announced on Thursday that Jonathan Wheatley will join as team principal 'no later than July 2025'. Earlier today day, Red Bull Racing also announced the departure of its sporting director. At Audi, there will be a clear division of roles between Wheatley and Binotto, who will jointly take charge of the team.

Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley will jointly form the new management team of Sauber Motorsport AG. " In their new positions, both will report directly to Gernot Döllner in his role as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sauber Motorsport AG. They will jointly take responsibility for the success of the racing team. There is a clear division of duties, and responsibilities have been individually defined," reads Audi's statement.

As COO and CTO, Binotto will take over the operational management of Sauber at the Hinwil location, as well as the technical development of the future racing cars. In this role, he is the technical link between the development teams in Hinwil and Audi Formula Racing in Neuburg, responsible for powerplant development.

Wheatley will focus primarily on the racing performance of the future F1 factory team, on the operational management of all racing events and on representing Audi in the role of team principal in all matters relating to Formula 1. The decision to opt for two leaders in the management team is part of a new structure of the future F1 team, with Sauber being fully taken over by Audi.
