Audi announces Wheatley as F1 team boss after Red Bull departure

    Audi has officially announced that Jonathan Wheatley will start work as team boss of the Formula 1 team that will be on the grid from 2026. He will team up with former Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto, who was recently announced as CTO at Sauber.

    Audi's announcement follows a few hours after that of Red Bull Racing. The Austrian F1 team announced the Wheatley is leaving the team after the current season, but immediately took the opportunity to announce what his next project would be.

    Audi have now made the news official. From July 2025 at the latest, Wheatley will start work as team principal, where he will work alongside Binotto. "I am delighted that we have been able to gain Jonathan Wheatley as Team Principal for our future Formula 1 team," said Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG. "Jonathan has played a major part in many Formula 1 race victories and World Championship titles in his Formula 1 career so far, and has extensive experience in the paddock. He is a very valuable addition to our team."

    At Audi, Wheatley will work intensively with Binotto, who was recently named the team's CTO. "With the appointment of Jonathan and Mattia we have taken a decisive step towards our entry into Formula 1. I am convinced that with the two of them, we have been able to combine an extremely high level of competence for Audi. Their experience and their ability will help us to get a foothold quickly in the tough competitive world of Formula 1," Döllner added.
