American talent
As a seven-year-old boy, Logan Sargeant saw his karting career take off. After competing in national championships in the United States in his first year, he moved to Europe in 2009. In 2015, Sargeant won the Karting World Championship, becoming the first American to win an FIA karting championship since Lake Speed in 1978.
Debut in Formula classes
In 2016, Sargeant progressed to the single-seaters. He made his debut in the United Arab Emirates Formula 4 championship and was on the podium 15 times in his first year, but a win was not yet in the bank. That changed when he moved to the British F4 championship the following year: Sargeant won two races and finished third in the championship behind his then-teammate Oscar Piastri.
Formula 3 and Formula 2
This was followed by a year in Formula Renault Eurocup, in which Sargeant finished fourth. In 2019, the American moved to the Formula 3 championship. There he was especially successful in his second year, finishing third just one point behind Theo Pourcharie and four points behind champion Piastri. Sargeant missed out on the championship in the last race. He started from pole, but a crash through no fault of his own on the first lap ended his race and championship dream.
In late 2021, Sargeant made his Formula 2 debut, before joining the Carlin team as a regular driver in 2022. He became the first American to win an F2 race. During the next race weekend, he did the same by winning at the Red Bull Ring and he finished the championship in fourth place, just one point behind Liam Lawson.
Debut in Formula 1
In October 2021, it was announced that Sargeant would join the Williams Driver Academy. Sometime later, he was allowed to sit in a Formula 1 car for the first time at the Young Drivers Test in Abu Dhabi. In 2022, he got his first opportunity to compete in an official F1 session and did so in front of his home crowd during the first free practice for the United States GP. Later, he also saw action during FP1 in Mexico, Brazil and Abu Dhabi.
Logan Sargeant in 2024
On the weekend of his FP1 debut in the United States, Williams announced that Sargeant could count on a permanent seat with the team in 2023, provided he scored enough points on his super licence. To do so, he had to finish fifth in the F2 championship or sixth in case he finished the season without getting penalty points.
The American more than succeeded by finishing fourth in the championship, so he made his GP debut as Alexander Albon's teammate at Williams in 2023. Sargeant had to wait until round 18 for his first points in Formula 1. They happened to come at his home race and he benefitted from the two disqualifications. It was already clear that Sargeant needed to get closer to Albon. But it didn't happen and Williams opted for Colapinto because they felt he would score more points.
Sargeant replaced by Colapinto at Williams
Ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, Williams announced that Sargeant would be replaced by Franco Colapinto from the F1 race at Monza onwards. Colapinto, who had been active in Formula 2 with MP Motorsport, will finish the 2024 season instead of Sargeant.
