Sargeant suffers a setback in his IndyCar plans
After being prematurely replaced by Franco Colapinto at Williams, Logan Sargeant is looking for a new challenge in the world of motorsport. For a long time, it seemed that the American would find a seat in his native country, the United States. It looked like that would be the next step for Sargeant, as the Prema team looked likely to give the American a chance in their first season in IndyCar. However, it looks like nothing will come of that.
Instead, Prema are negotiating with Robert Shwartzman, who is currently Ferrari's test and reserve driver, also competing on behalf of the Italians in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). The Israeli, who also holds a Russian passport, is the leading candidate to become Callum Ilott's teammate in 2025, taking the seat away from Sargeant.
Sargeant, incidentally, will do an Indycar test for the Meyer Shank Racing team in November. No spot is available there for '25, but the team wants to see if Sargeant is interested in offering a seat at some point. Other IndyCar teams will no doubt also be watching Sargeant's test with suspicion to see what the former F1 driver can do.
What does the future hold for Sargeant?
With the Prema seat that once looked to be Sargeant's now likely to go to Shwartzman, what will the American do to continue his racing career? Well, that remains unclear. In Formula 1, as well as Formula E, there are no more seats available. In IndyCar, spots are also scarce. In principle, only drivers who pay to race can still find a place in the series. For Sargeant, a move to IMSA or WEC is now the most obvious option.
