Looking back on qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is also left with mixed feelings. The Austrian says he does not know how to explain Hamilton's lacklustre sessions and foresees a huge amount of homework ahead of Sunday's start.
"It was really not a good day for us today," Wolff begins his analysis in conversation with the men of Sky Sports. "We need to find out why we couldn't get Hamilton's car in a better place."
Having to settle for a P7 in Monaco, the seven-time world champion has put himself in a tricky package here, on the tricky street circuit. Wolff once again emphasised the vestigial atmosphere in the pit at Mercedes: "We really don't know. It seemed pretty good all day. Hamilton couldn't find the grip today."
Bottas had taken pole
Wolff also spoke briefly about Bottas, whose result did do good business. The late changes to Finn's setup worked with his high confidence today and gave him a P3. Despite this, Wolff knows there could have been more, had Charles Leclerc not pushed his Ferrari into the wall: "Valtteri was doing a pole lap and in all probability, he could have taken pole. But then the crash happened in Q3," Wolff said.
