Recently Ferrari announced that they will be making their comeback in long distance racing with their newly announced hypercar. Charles Leclerc has expressed his interest in competing in the Le Mans 24 Hours with this car, should the opportunity arise.
Ferrari set for comeback in WEC
Ferrari has participated in long distance races in the past, winning their last Le Mans 24 Hour race in 1965. After that they kept it to a GT programme for a long time, but from 2023 they will take part in the World Endurance Championship with their own Hypercar.
Charles Leclerc has previously said he would like to take part in the Le Mans 24 Hours, and reiterated this during Ferrari's team launch on Friday. "I love Le Mans, I've always been a fan of it. If the opportunity arises, I will be happy to participate," Leclerc told Motorsport.com. "At the moment the focus is on Formula 1, but again: if the opportunity arises, why not?"
Sainz slightly less enthusiastic than Leclerc about Le Mans
Teammate Carlos Sainz thinks the Hypercar programme is an interesting project, but is a little more cautious about participating in Le Mans. "It's great to see that a brand like Ferrari wants to participate in Le Mans again, but I think there's enough to do here and my focus is fully on Formula 1," Sainz said.
