F1 Today | Verstappen situation exclusive, Sky Sports come under fire
With the entertaining Azerbaijan Grand Prix ticking off the 17th race of the 2024 Formula 1 season, the circus will enter Singapore this weekend for race number 18. But while teams and drivers recover from the thriller in Baku, today, GPblog exclusively unpacked the Max Verstappen situation, with question marks still hanging over his Red Bull tenure. Along with that, Sky Sports have come under fire for bias in their Grand Prix weekend coverage, and exclusives from Formula 2 and Formula 3 as well.
Verstappen situation unpacked
Since the news that Adrian Newey was signing a multi-year deal with Astin Martin to return back to the world of F1, there have been many rumours surrounding the British team. One of the major rumours was whether Max Verstappen would follow Newey and leave Red Bull to join the Lawrence Stroll-owned team at Silverstone.
Plenty of stories have been made about the three-time world champion and his future at Red Bull Racing. After the allegations that surrounded Christian Horner before the 2024 season turned the paddock upside down, the rumour mill started spinning, with Mercedes and Toto Wolff interested in replacing the departing Lewis Hamilton with the Dutchman. And in the last few days, a German website reported that Wolff and Jos Verstappen have a handshake deal made with Verstappen Jr. moving to Mercedes after 2025.
However, as GPblog exclusively explain, Verstappen is not thinking of a quick departure from Red Bull. He wants to continue to try and win with the Austrian team for the foreseeable future, wanting to win a title with them in 2025. No concrete deal is in place with either Aston Martin or Mercedes after 2025, but the Dutchman will keep his eye out for developments from teams on the grid. Will Newey lead Aston Martin to the front? Will Mercedes find their way back to the top step of the podium? Those answers will lead us to Verstappen's decision.
Sky Sports under fire for bias
After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, there was a lot of talk about Sky Sports and the British media in general, as they were both called out for biased coverage of the sport, with Newry previously saying that back in 2021, the media in the UK generally 'demonised' the Dutchman during his titanic title battle with Lewis Hamilton.
However, Sky Sports lead commentator David Croft has responded to the reports of bias in Sky Sports, but he believes that he tries to act as impartial as possible while commentating on TV. "I try to be as impartial as I can. It’s really difficult to prove whether you’re impartial or not because we all watch with a bias," he said to Speedcafe.com. The commentator did say that he may react more enthusiastically when a British driver wins a Grand Prix but ensures that he tries to be just the same no matter who finishes in P1.
F2 and F3 exclusives
GPblog also have exclusive interviews from the world of Formula 2 and Formula 3, with one of them being with Red Bull Junior Team and current F2 driver Oliver Goethe. The Danish-German driver replaced Franco Colapinto in F2 after he joined Willimas for the remainder of the season, saying he spoke to Red Bull after his first race at the Italian Grand Prix. "I think for a first weekend, I showed the pace I can have. I think it'll only get better from here. It's a positive start and there's more to come," said Goethe, also speaking about the help he has gotten from the Austrian team.
GPblog also spoke with F2 and F3 CEO Bruno Michel, and there was talk of races potentially being held in either North and South America. "We are in talks with promoters in North and South America. But at the moment we have not found a way to do this right for them as for us," said the Frenchman, seemingly open to the idea of bringing F2 to the Americas. However, a change to the schedule of races in each series is not to Michel's liking. Be sure to read it all on GPblog's website!
