Colapinto thrilled at Monza: 'Dreamed of this as a kid'
Franco Colapinto will be a Formula 1 driver from this race weekend onwards. It was announced on Tuesday that the Argentine would replace Logan Sargeant for the rest of the season. Speaking to GPblog and others, the brand-new Williams driver talked about how he was told he was promoted.
Currently, Colapinto is sixth in the Formula 2 championship. However, he will no longer be in action in a Formula 2 car as he will drive for Williams in Formula 1.
Colapinto thrilled because of F1 debut
Ahead of the race weekend, the Argentine told how he was told he would get the chance: "On Monday, I was in the Formula 2 simulator with MP Motorsport, preparing for the race with my team for Formula 2 here in Monza. So you can imagine how late it was. I don't know when they were thinking about it, but it's an opportunity I've been ready for and waited for so long."
Colapinto continued, "Since I was a young kid, I have always dreamt of this happening. And today to have the chance to come here and speak to you, it's a pleasure. And I'm just extremely grateful that Williams is giving me this opportunity. It came very late, of course, but I'm always ready for it. I was not expecting it, to be honest, but I can't explain how happy I am to be here. Williams have been very supportive and for them to give me this opportunity is insane."
