F1 Today | Cardile joins Aston Martin to unite with Red Bull target Cowell
Just a day after he announced that he would be leaving Ferrari, Enrico Cardile has joined Aston Martin for the 2025 season. Cardile will join with former Mercedes engine department worker Andy Cowell whom Red Bull were interested in before he joined the British team.
Cardile joins Aston Martin as CTO
News broke the day after the British Grand Prix that Enrico Cardile would step down as chassis technical director with immediate effect from Ferrari, with team principal Fred Vasseur taking over his position temporarily.
Just an hour after the news broke of Cardile's departure from the Italian team, GPblog learned that Cardile would be joining Aston Martin, joining forces with Dan Fallows who holds the position of technical director, as well as former head of the Mercedes engine department Andy Cowell who was signed as Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Then, just a day later, Aston Martin announced that Cardile would be joining them for the 2025 season, confirming the learning from GPblog earlier in the week but officially understanding what position the Italian would take up. The former Ferrari man would be joining them as their new Chief Technical Officer (CTO), as well as coming out and saying it's a role that "further strengthens the senior technical group at the Silverstone-based team. Enrico brings a wealth of Formula One experience to Aston Martin Aramco."
Former Red Bull target Cowell will partner Cardile
A week before Cardile joined Aston Martin, news broke that former Mercedes engineer Cowell would be joining to bolster the team behind the scenes for the 2025 season. When that news came out, Christian Horner was asked about the signing for the former Mercedes man, and he admitted that he was somebody that Red Bull were highly interested in.
Speaking at the British Grand Prix to several media outlets including GPblog, Horner said, "Andy is a great guy. He's a very strong engineer. He did a great job at HPP (Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, ed.) He was the main backbone behind that project."
The Red Bull team boss admits that there was also interest from Red Bull Powertrains, but a different choice was made when it appeared Cowell was due for a break. Cowell was head of Mercedes' engine department for a long time, helping to win no fewer than eight constructors' titles. Cowell left the team in 2021 and was recently appointed CEO by Aston Martin.
