Perez should start scoring again after difficult period: 'Will be very close'
- Corwin Kunst
Sergio Perez failed to make an impact at the Austrian Grand Prix. The Mexican crossed the finish line in P7, while it would have been (only) P8 if Lando Norris had finished the race. Max Verstappen's teammate hopes to finally get on the podium again at Silverstone this weekend.
Not only Perez finished in seventh place, but also lost a battle to Nico Hulkenberg and Haas. The Mexican believes that happened because of the damage he sustained on Lap 1. "It was quite a tough weekend overall especially the race with the damage we had in the car since since lap one. We were just out of contention. The damage was just a bit too much and we were just going backwards."
With the British Grand Prix being the last of the triple-header, there is an immediate chance for revenge for the veteran driver. On paper, the RB20 should go well at the fast Silverstone. Perez agrees: "It should be a strong weekend for us. We're looking forward to this sort of high-speed content and Silverstone always throw a massive challenge with the wind. It can be particularly very challenging. I think it's going to be all very close as it's been the last few weekends already in different circuits so I don't expect anything different. I think it's going to be everything super tight and close."
Perez on Red Bull's 2026 PUs
From 2026 - when the new regulations take effect in Formula 1 - Red Bull will run its own engine. Perez is therefore still there thanks to his contract extension last month. What impression does he have of that at the moment?
"Well, it's very impressive to see and how timing-wise, how early they've been going into those regulations with the engine. When you're there and you go to the tour, it’s very impressive the amount of people we we currently have there and how advanced they are already with the engine, looking for performance. In terms of timing, everything stacks up really well. How competitive things are going to be, no one of the drivers or even engine manufacturers have any idea in that regard. But I'll say that they've done a tremendous job so far," 'Checo' explained.
