rain in le mans, safety car hours on track

Rain disrupts 24 Hours of Le Mans, already hours of safety car

16 June at 06:45

The night portion of the 24 Hours of Le Mans literally fell into the water. Since around three o'clock, the rain had been pouring down and it made it far too dangerous to race at full speed, forcing race control to send the safety car onto the track. At 7:45 am, however, hopeful news arrived: there is sight of racing again.

There is absolutely no telling who will win the race. Behind the safety car, the #6 Porsche Penske had been driving in P1 for hours, followed by both Toyotas (the #7 of Jose Maria Lopez, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries being the better of the two, ed.). Sebastien Bourdais, Renger van der Zande and Scott Dixon seemed to be running a losing race on Saturday night with their Cadillac, but they still advanced to spot #4.

In the hypercars, there are four DNFs for now: the two Alpine cars and the two BMWs. The former had engine problems on Saturday night, while BMW had two crashes.

Many spectators had taken refuge in one of the tunnels under the circuit over the past few hours, at least to stay dry in these conditions.
