Who are potential Alpine replacements Jack Doohan and Mick Schumacher?
Alpine is yet to confirm who will be driving for them in 2025. Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon are out of contract at the end of 2024. Given that the pair have a tense relationship, both may explore options elsewhere. Therefore, who will drive for Alpine? It isn't the most attractive team at the moment. The A5-24 is not up to standard this season, and the Renault works engine hasn't been as powerful as its competitors for several years. However, with new engine regulations on the way in 2026, many drivers will wonder if Alpine will be able to compete with F1 giants. It's still a Formula 1 seat, after all. Alpine-affiliated drivers Jack Doohan and Mick Schumacher have been linked with the French team for 2025. Who are they and what is their relationship with Alpine?
Who is Jack Doohan?
Jack Doohan is an Australian racing driver who is currently the reserve driver for the Alpine F1 team. Doohan was born in January 2003 and is the son of Grand Prix motorcycle road racing world champion Mick Doohan. The 21-year-old most recently competed in the 2023 F2 season for Invicta Racing, finishing third overall. In his 59 Formula 2 starts, Doohan won six races, secured five pole positions and finished on the podium 11 times. Doohan's first kart was gifted to him by seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, as their families were close.
Doohan signed for the Alpine Academy in early 2022 and participated in his first FP1 at the Mexican Grand Prix and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in the same year. He has since become Alpine's official reserve driver, which he juggled with F2 in 2023, but became his full-time role in 2024. Doohan's focus is now fully on securing a seat in Formula 1. The Australian is yet to announce his future plans, but due to his strong ties with Alpine, he could be a strong contender for the Enstone-based team in 2025.
What is Mick Schumacher doing now?
Son of the legendary Michael Schumacher, Mick was born in March 1999 and has emerged as one of Alpine's options for the 2025 season. Schumacher won the F2 title in 2020, and won three races in his F2 career, finishing on the podium 11 times. The German has previously been an F1 driver as he signed with Haas as a Ferrari academy driver. He scored 12 points in his 43 starts with the American team but left at the end of 2022. He was replaced by the experienced Nico Hulkenberg for the 2023 season.
After leaving the Ferrari academy in 2022, He signed with Mercedes as their reserve driver, fulfilling the role in 2023 and 2024. Unlike Doohan, Schumacher is actively racing in 2024. He signed with the Alpine hypercar team in the World Endurance Championship for the 2024 season and is set to compete in the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans race with the French team. Alpine team principal Bruno Famin is fond of the German driver. His previous F1 experience could give him an edge over his friend Jack Doohan if the opportunity were to arise.
