Perez not a fan of new F1 sprint format

The Formula 1 calendar in 2024 features six sprint races, two of which were run back-to-back during the Grand Prix weekends in China and Miami. Opinions differ among F1 drivers about the sprints, and Sergio Perez would even be in favour of a revision of the new sprint format. Max Verstappen, on the other hand, is somewhat more enthusiastic about the new format.

Perez wants a review of the new sprint format

Perez is particularly concerned about the workload of team members. "I think it puts a lot of workload on on our mechanics with the current format as it is. It's definitely a lot of a workload to be able to change the car right after the sprint event before qualifying. It just puts a lot of workload. I would really like to be able to review the format to look after our people in our sport," said the Red Bull Racing driver.

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri isn't as bothered. Even the fact that two sprint weekends took place consecutively makes little difference to him. "I think for me having two in a row doesn't really make much difference. For me, it's very much the same. You attack the weekend in a similar way, it's not a big difference if they're together or not. I think some circuits are better for sprints than others, but having two in a row for me makes no difference.

    Sargeant agrees with Verstappen

Max Verstappen is among the drivers who are not keen on sprint weekends, although the Dutchman has slightly revised his opinion since the new sprint format was introduced. Logan Sargeant is no fan of sprint races either: "I would just prefer to have 24 normal weekends and leave it at that," said the Williams driver.

As for Valtteri Bottas, it does not matter when the sprint weekends take place. "No, it doesn't make a difference when they are. In the end, it's six in a year anyway, so it doesn't make a difference," said the Finn.

Lance Stroll, in turn, would be in favour of a completely different format: "Two-day events would be nice because we have so many race weekends now, so many Thursdays. Like practice, three hours on a Saturday morning, qualify Saturday afternoon, and race Sunday. That would be good."
