It is now official: Liberty Media has bought a large part of the rights to MotoGP. Thus, the company now owns Formula 1 and MotoGP.
Liberty Media Corporation announced on Monday that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Dorna Sports, the exclusive commercial rights holder of the MotoGP World Championship, from Bridgepoint and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.
Liberty Media acquires MotoGP
MotoGP will be attributed to the tracking shares of Liberty Media's Formula One Group. With this deal, Liberty Media will own 86% of MotoGP, and MotoGP management will hold the remaining 14%. The transaction price of this deal is 4.2 billion euros.
If approved by all authorities, the acquisition will be completed around the end of 2024. Liberty Media may want Formula 1 and MotoGP to run together in one weekend in the future.
