Wolff would love to get Verstappen: 'For him I'll do a handstand'
Toto Wolff wants to be at the top with his Mercedes at all costs, but this has not worked out that way for the past two years. Of course, the driver is important in a Formula 1 team. Wolff would love to see Max Verstappen join the team and replace Lewis Hamilton.
"I would love to have him [Max]. But firstly we need to sort out our car," Wolff told reporters after the race. He continued: "We owe it to George and Lewis to improve the car and give them equipment that is good before dreaming about the future."
Regarding that future, Wolff says: "We have a few interesting options. That’s not going to be a decision we want to take in the next few weeks. Rather a few months depending on how it goes."
Handstand for Verstappen
Whether he also thinks Verstappen should come to Mercedes' team? He puts the ball entirely in the Dutchman's court: "This is a decision Max needs to take. There is no team up and down the grid that wouldn’t do handstands to have him in the car," Toto Wolff said. "A driver will always try to be in the fastest possible car. That gives you the best chances of winning races and championships. This is where Max is at the moment. Jos, Max and Raymond [Verstappen's manager] are very straight. Sometimes uncomfortably straight. They will make up their mind. But fundamentally the racing driver is calibrated to being in the best car."
