Mick Schumacher on his role as reserve driver

Here's what Schumacher learned from Hamilton at Mercedes

After two years in Formula 1, the Formula 1 fairytale came to an end for Mick Schumacher after the 2022 season. He then took up the role of reserve driver at Mercedes. In that, he learned a lot, he said in an interview with F1.com and others.

Mick Schumacher has not had much time to learn after entering the premier class. He made his debut at Haas in 2021. That year, Haas were the slowest of the field and the team failed to score a single point. In 2022, the team made a leap forward, but was still not the ideal place for Schumacher.

Schumacher learned a lot at Mercedes

In his time as a reserve driver at Mercedes, he says he did get to learn a lot. So too from Lewis Hamilton and George Russell“I guess the biggest point for me to elaborate on [is] I know as a driver now much more what I want from my team around me, from what I feel like I’m worth and what I can bring to a team. Obviously going into my first year in F1 it was kind of hard to know exactly what my position should be, and how far can I go with my comments and everything. Having worked with Lewis and George for one year now, I kind of know how high the bar is set and how far I can go, and I have no problem sharing my information in the future.”

After all Formula 1 teams decided not to make any changes to their driver line-up for 2024, there are again no openings for Schumacher to race in Formula 1. He does want to race himself again and he will do so in the upcoming season as a WEC driver with Alpine. Incidentally, he also still remains a reserve driver at Mercedes, perhaps hoping for a seat in 2025.
