It is still a while before the new Formula 1 season begins, but in the meantime, racing is already happening elsewhere. Formula E has restarted and is running the Mexico City E-Prix this weekend. Friday saw the first free practice session, in which Nyck de Vries made his comeback.

De Vries' comeback, Vandoorne's grid penalty

NEOM McLaren driver Jake Hughes set the fastest time in the first free practice session for the Mexico City E-Prix. With just over five minutes to go he crashed, causing a red flag and after which the session was not resumed. He finished ahead of Pascal Wehrlein, Nico Muller and Robin Frijns, followed by reigning world champion Jake Dennis.

Nyck de Vries, for whom the Gen3 cars are relatively new, finished the practice session in 20th place. His Mahindra teammate Edoardo Mortara finished just before him in eighteenth place. Stoffel Vandoorne recorded the 15th time on behalf of DS Penske, but he was given a grid penalty of a single place for not having driven into his garage during the red flag.

Jaguar drivers Nick Cassidy and Mitch Evans received the same penalty for the same offence. While all drivers had entered the pit lane during the red flag, they are also required to park their cars in the pit box. That did not happen in these cases.
