Jos Verstappen was harsh on his Max: 'It was shameful'
Red Bull Racing are having a very good time in 2023. The Austrian team have won all 10 races so far, and the two sprint races. Former Red Bull junior Jamie Alguersairi argues that the current success is mainly due to chief designer Adrian Newey. The driver also discusses F1 star Max Verstappen's youth.
Newey the man behind Red Bull success
The RB19 has so far looked virtually unbeatable in 2023, especially in the hands of Verstappen. The Dutchman has now won six races in a row and also secured five pole positions in a row. The big man behind the great success in recent years, according to Alguersairi, is top designer Newey.
"It is Newey. It is incredible that this brilliant man is still making perfect cars. Of course, it is not only because of him, but also the whole team is excellent. Red Bull is the best team in the history of Formula 1 because they make no mistakes and there are no cracks in their structure and approach. Everything fits. They never make mistakes. Building a winning team is essential. It's not just about making a great car," the former Toro Rosso driver told AS.com in an interview.
Is Verstappen better than Alonso and Hamilton?
Verstappen seems to be heading for his third consecutive world title this season, but Alguersairi finds it difficult to say whether the Red Bull Racing driver is better than Fernando Alonso or Lewis Hamilton. "The best driver usually drives the most dominant car because everything is going very well, the motivation is higher, things come naturally, the confidence is huge... That's what is happening with Max at the moment. Everything goes very easily then."
Jos was tough on Max Verstappen
Verstappen had to go through quite a bit to be where he is today. Father Jos Verstappen was always very hard on his son. "It's the exception that proves the rule. His father taught him, through violence, to win races. That's how he was trained. There was no luck. They pushed him so far that they ended up with a perfect driver. His father used violence when Max did not win in karting. I would never raise my son like that. It was shameful, but it worked for them," Alguersuari said, not specifically explaining what he meant by the word 'violence'.
