Emerson Fittipaldi is hoping for the return of the South African Grand Prix. Although the two-time world champion never won at the Kyalami circuit, he keeps fond memories of it.

Between 1962 and 1993, the South African Grand Prix featured 23 times on the official Formula One calendar. The first three Grands Prix were held at East London, followed by 20 races at the famous Kyalami. After Alain Prost 's victory in 1993, the Grand Prix did not return to the calendar.

Back to South Africa

''I was lucky to race in the South African Grand Prix for more than 10 years. It was a fantastic Grand Prix,'' Fittipaldi said to Bettors. Fittipaldi never won the GP, though he came close twice. For instance, he finished second behind Denny Hulme in 1972 and came third in 1973. ''They love motor racing there at Kyalami,'' Fittipaldi stated.

Auto racing did return to South Africa. This year, for instance, there was South Africa's first ePrix in Cape Town. The Formula E race was won by Antonio Felix da Costa. Kyalami also hopes to bring F1 back to the country, but it has been quiet for a long time around this possible return. First of all, the track will have to be modified, as it does not currently have the right licence. It also remains to be seen to what extent the government is behind the return. A public survey has not yet been conducted.

Fittipaldi does hope Formula 1 will return to South Africa. It would ensure that the sport returns to a continent where it has not been for years. ''The sport is expanding and going back to Africa, yes I would love to see Kyalami back again,'' the Brazilian concludes.
