After the F1 winter tests, Aston Martin is a big topic of conversation. Last winter, Lawrence Stroll's ambitious team was finally able to take a big step towards the top of the field?
Hill does not rule out Alonso wins in 2023
Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso looked fast and the car looked stable during the three days of testing in Bahrain. Besides Red Bull Racing's good preparations and Max Verstappen being seen as a title favourite again, Aston Martin was the talk of the winter tests among pundits and analysts.
At the F1 Nation podcast former F1 champion Damon Hill said Alonso is quite capable of winning races in 2023 and Aston Martin ambassador and former F1 driver Pedro de la Rosa also wants to set the bar high. Hill said after the show's host asks him how much he would give in a bet for an Alonso win in 2023: "I really wouldn't give you much, to be honest. It looks like a candid possibility. I would never rule him out for anything, but that car looks really good."
De la Rosa sets the bar high for Aston Martin
De la Rosa is a guest and is presented with Hill's enthusiasm. Indeed, according to Hill, Aston Martin looked like the third team for 2023 based on the winter tests. De la Rosa: "Wow, that's quite a statement to say we are the third biggest team, fastest team. I don't know that for sure. It will be difficult to say until we have had qualifying [...] But yes, why not? We have to set the bar high."
Looking at the longruns driven during testing, the ambassador says that Aston Martin has quite a good chance. Alonso was not the fastest according to the Spaniard, but in the final phase of winter testing, conditions were representative of the race and looked promising. Aston Martin's ambition has always been very high, so the team will need to fully exploit this strong start.
