Gerhard Berger will not return to Formula 1. The Austrian was linked to Audi's project but has decided not to completely turn his life around again.
In December, it was revealed that Berger was on Audi's radar. Sources from the Volkswagen Group reportedly reported that there would be a "Niki Lauda-like role" for the Austrian as the team's super advisor. Earlier, Berger was also linked to the role as team boss at Ferrari.
Berger not going to Audi
In conversation with Speedweek Berger confirmed that some things did play a role, but the former Toro Rosso co-owner himself does not want to return to the king class of motorsport. ''There were considerations, but then I would have had to arrange my life differently again. The young children play an important role,'' said the former F1 driver.
''I want to take my six-year-old son to his first kart races and my nine-year-old daughter to go horse riding. I want to have more time for them. There were several requests, all of them were super interesting, but as I said, they didn't fit into my life planning.''
Audi will not officially start in Formula 1 as an engine supplier and partner of Sauber until 2026, but in the background, the German brand's entrance is already being worked hard on. For instance, Andreas Seidl has been recruited by Sauber as CEO to ensure a smooth transition from Alfa Romeo to Audi.
