Coronel: 'Next to Verstappen, your career just ends'

Lando Norris revealed earlier this year that he did hold talks with Red Bull Racing about a future at the Austrian racing team. However, the Briton signed a long-term contract at McLaren, a wise choice, says Tom Coronel. According to the Dutchman, a Formula 1 driver's career ends once he sits next to Max Verstappen.
Norris is the leading man at McLaren. Daniel Ricciardo has struggled to drive the car and keep up with the young Briton over the past two seasons. The Australian will be replaced by Oscar Piastri in 2023 and will himself leave for Red Bull Racing as the third driver.
Apart from two years with Carlos Sainz, Norris has yet to face a real challenge at McLaren. The Briton stands strong and is the future of the British team. Both Norris and Christian Horner have indicated that talks took place with Red Bull, but a deal never materialised. The Briton always preferred a new contract at McLaren.
'Next to Verstappen, your career ends'
Norris will be at McLaren at least until the end of 2025. Speaking to Formule1.nl Coronel says the 23-year-old driver has made a good choice. "Whether he should sit next to Max? No, then he will get the same as everyone else. Next to Max, your career just ends."
Coronel is referring here to Sergio Perez and his predecessors Pierre Gasly and Alexander Albon, who all failed to live up to their potential alongside the two-time world champion. Verstappen is a strong driver who is hard to beat. Coronel therefore believes Norris was wise not to go to Red Bull. The Brit is better off waiting for other opportunities in F1.
