Did Verstappen earn world title entirely by himself? 'Also a bit lucky'
- GPblog.com
Max Verstappen was successful again this season. After beating Lewis Hamilton in 2021, things went a lot easier for him this calendar year. The Dutchman's performance did not surprise Sascha Roos at all, although it would also be down to the competition.
At the beginning of the racing year, Ferrari managed to offer the necessary resistance to Red Bull Racing, but the Italian racing stable did not manage to keep this up for long. It resulted in Verstappen grabbing the world title relatively easily, while the Constructors' Championship also ended with a big lead.
Verstappen keeps rivals behind
The commentator of Sky Sports Germany finds it disappointing that Mercedes and Ferrari did not manage more, but also has a lot of respect for Verstappen's qualities. Indeed, the question is whether either team could have kept him from the world title at all.
"I definitely thought he could do it. But he was also a bit lucky that Ferrari and Mercedes were so bad," Roos laughingly stated to the German medium. "In the end, you always need a bit of luck and driving ability to win, but the question is how that ends up being distributed percentage-wise. I think with Verstappen the biggest part is of course his skill."
