Red Bull Racing has had a great season, winning both championships. Adrian Newey stated in conversation with Auto, Motor und Sport that the team had a lot of work to do to achieve this. For instance, the new regulations in Formula 1 caused a problem in the team.
With all the creative ideas, teams took forced risk this calendar year. Red Bull also entered the season with question marks in its mind. It soon came to light that the Austrian formation's car was too heavy, causing it to lose a lot of time.
"A lot of things came together, so the weight was higher than expected," explained Red Bull's top man. "When you develop a car, you work with margins on the estimated weight. We thought we would be close to the weight limit. In reality, we went way over it."
Newey on unpredictability F1
Newey does not blame his team or himself. Indeed, according to the Brit it is unavoidable as a team that you cannot know for sure aspects and it was therefore especially important that Red Bull managed to come to a solution quickly. The formation managed to do that over the course of the season.
"With completely new rules, you do what you think is right. You have no idea in which direction the competitors are going. We were a bit surprised ourselves that the other cars were slower than us on the straights," said Newey, calling the situation 'almost embarrassing'.
