Max Verstappen has indicated several times that he will not remain active in Formula 1 until he is 40 years old. The Red Bull Racing driver also wants to try other branches of motorsport, and the two-time world champion is thinking mainly of endurance racing. Verstappen would be only too happy to team up with Fernando Alonso.

Many former Formula 1 drivers are now active in IndyCar, but we should not expect to see Verstappen shining in the United States in say a decade from now. The 24-year-old Dutchman also rules out a one-off appearance in the Indy500 to go for the Triple Crown [winning the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans]. Le Mans is, however, on Verstappen's list.

Alonso wants to race with Verstappen

Alonso recently jokingly said he would love to compete with Verstappen in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. At Motorsport.com Verstappen is confronted with those statements. "Haha, yes. Fernando will never stop racing. He is maybe slightly different from me in that respect. But it would be nice to have a good chance. If Fernando does, he wants to go for victory in a competitive car. I am exactly the same way in that."

Alonso has already managed to win the iconic 24-hour race twice. In 2018, he crossed the finish line first on his debut with teammates Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima. In 2019, the trio won the race again. Alonso has also unsuccessfully taken on the Indy 500.

Focus on Formula 1

If Alonso wants to compete with Verstappen in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Spaniard will have to exercise some patience. After all, it is not in Max's plans to get into an endurance car any time soon, not even a small outing: his focus is entirely on Formula 1 for now. "I don't want to rush it. A lot of things are also changing in endurance racing at the moment and it's better to watch that first and see how it all works out."
