Porsche in F1 after all? This team is said to be interested
- GPblog.com
After Red Bull Racing dropped out, a return of Porsche to Formula 1 seemed off the table. However, Formula 1 organizers still hope that the brand - part of the Volkswagen group - can be found on the grid as an engine supplier in 2026.
There are a few teams looking for an engine supplier or wanting to brand their engine Porsche. In fact, only two teams can do that: Haas and Williams. According to Auto, Motor und Sport Porsche is now targeting Williams. But there are some bumps in the road. The main one: Porsche does not have the infrastructure to build its own power unit. That is precisely why they wanted to join Red Bull Powertrains. Of course, it is possible to build a proper factory, but that takes time. For 2026 - when the new engine regulations take effect - it seems too late now.
Not for sale
Porsche wanted to buy in 50 percent at Red Bull, but the Austrian team was not keen on that. Buying in somewhere and thus influencing policy is also what Porsche would like at Williams. But Dorilton Capitol investors - the owners of Williams - do not seem interested on selling the team. Moreover, Williams informs the German medium, there has been no contact with Porsche.
There is a way for Porsche to still get on the grid fairly easily: take over the engines from Audi (which will supply Sauber with power units) and simply call them Porsche. Auto, Motor und Sport suspects that the iconic brand is too proud for that, even though, like Audi, it belongs to the Volkswagen group. Either way, if Porsche wants to compete in Formula 1 by 2026, it needs to hurry. Time is running out, if there is any time left at all.
