Hamilton addresses booing in the crowd: "Bit awkward this time around"
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes tried to run an alternative strategy to try and beat Max Verstappen but ultimately didn't have the pace to prevent the Red Bull driver from winning the Mexico Grand Prix.
Different strategy
Starting in the second and third, Mercedes tried to attack Verstappen going into the first corner. Even with the aid of the tow, neither Hamilton nor George Russell could challenge after Verstappen's strong defence. This then started a strategy battle with Mercedes switching from medium to hard tyres. In the post-race interview with Marc Genè, Hamilton admitted that Mercedes made the wrong tyre choice.
"I was close in the first stint, but ultimately Red Bull had the better tyre strategy. I'm not sure it was the right tyre, I thought we should've started on the soft. It was okay in the first stint. Congratulations to Max," Hamilton said.
Hamilton also addressed the booing situation in the crowd: "This has been an amazing crowd. Bit awkward this time around, boos all day. But nonetheless, I have so much love for Mexico and for the people here," he added.
