Colton Herta hoped to drive in Formula 1 next season, but the FIA refused to give him a super licence. Rinus van Kalmthout knows him well from the IndyCar world and doubts on Race Café on Ziggo Sport whether the American can handle the level.

The Dutchman believes Herta has shown how much talent he has in recent years. However, the IndyCar has more quality drivers to offer and, according to Van Kalmthout, there are therefore other candidates to go to Formula 1.

"I don't think he is the best IndyCar driver at the moment," judged Van Kalmthout, who does think 31-year-old American Josef Newgarden is good enough for Formula 1. "That one is maybe a bit too old, but I think he has something more."

Herta in middle of championship

Whereas Herta finished tenth in the World Championship this season, Van Kalmthout did not get beyond a twelfth finishing spot. Will Power was the big winner of the season with 560 points. Newgarden followed him in second position with a 16-point difference.
