The Portuguese Grand Prix of 2020
The 2020 event took place on the circuit of Portimao. The circuit, located in the Algarve, has never organised a Grand Prix for the king's class of motor racing before. The track is still relatively young because the construction was only completed in 2008. The lap counts 4,692 kilometres.
Since April 2020 the track does have a Grade 1 license, so from now on they are allowed to organise these kinds of races.
It is not that Formula 1 cars have never driven in Portimao before. The circuit is one of the leading test locations in Europe. For example, teams like McLaren and Ferrari tested there in 2008 and 2009.
What does the Portuguese racing weekend look like?
The Grand Prix is scheduled for 2nd May. On Friday 30th April, the teams will have two hours to practice. On Saturday we will see the third free practice session before the 15:00 qualifying session. On Sunday the World Championship points will be distributed in Portugal from 15:00.
