Pierre Gasly knows where he stands now that Sergio Perez's contract has been extended at Red Bull Racing. The Frenchman will race for the AlphaTauri team in 2022. The official confirmation is still some way off, but it's not likely to be long in coming. Gasly has no other options in the driver's market.

The only teams Gasly was still linked to were Red Bull and Alpine. The latter, however, announced on Thursday that Fernando Alonso has signed a new contract. Only Mercedes has one spot left, but Gasly does not qualify for that team. The 25-year-old driver therefore knows that his future lies with AlphaTauri for the time being.

Opportunities at Red Bull in 2023?

Perez's contract at Red Bull has presumably been extended by just one year, which opens the door for Gasly to step in as a teammate of Max Verstappen after 2022. For the 2023 season there are a lot more seats available so Red Bull will have to be careful not to send its pupil to a more competitive team than AlphaTauri.

The official announcement is likely to be made sometime in September once Yuki Tsunoda's contract has been extended. The young Japanese driver has had an inconsistent debut season, but there are no talents from Formula 2 or Formula 3 who are ready to make the switch to the premier class of motor sport.
