In Azerbaijan Sebastian Vettel scored a special podium with his new team Aston Martin. It was not only his first time with the British team, but also the first time ever that Aston Martin stood on an F1 podium.

The first for Aston Martin

A rock-solid race and some help from the men racing up front meant Vettel was on the podium in his sixth race for Aston Martin. Aston Martin returned to Formula 1 as a works team in 2021, after an absence of sixty years. The team had competed in a few races in 1959 and 1960.

However, the team never reached the podium during those years. In fact, no points were scored in the first years of the team. The best result was achieved by Roy Salvadori, who finished sixth twice in 1959. But back then, a driver didn't get any points for a sixth position.

Personally also a special podium

For Vettel personally, the podium is also special. The German has been on the podium every year since 2008. Only in his debut year, when he drove one GP for BMW and joined Toro Rosso halfway through the season, he did not manage to score a podium.
