Max Verstappen enters the race weekend in Baku as the championship leader. However, it remains to be seen whether he and Red Bull Racing can repeat the result of the Monaco Grand Prix, or whether Mercedes will prevail again in Azerbaijan.

Verstappen says he took his victory in Monaco quite soberly. "I have noticed that the victory in Monaco had more impact on other people than on myself," he says in conversation with Motorsport.com. "Of course it was super nice to be able to win in Monaco, but I'm not someone who is very exuberant or goes all out after a win."

Verstappen thinks Mercedes are still ahead of Red Bull

The 23-year-old Dutchman goes on to say that the atmosphere in the team is very good, especially after the win in Monaco, but that the focus is on winning the title. "They know very well that we have to continue this momentum and that it has to be even better than in the first five races," says Verstappen. He certainly enjoyed his victory but is now mainly looking ahead to the upcoming races.

Verstappen thinks Mercedes still has a small lead over Red Bull Racing on most circuits. "I think Mercedes are still slightly ahead of us on normal circuits," he says. He adds that they have started the season better than in recent years, but now they also need to push on. "Only then will we have a good chance in the end," said the Dutchman.
