The acclaimed return of racing legend Fernando Alonso in Formula 1 would of course not be complete without another round of champagne on the podium for the Spaniard. However, Alonso does not estimate his chances of a podium in 2021 are very high, and says that it depends largely on how many blunders Mercedes manages to make next year.

In anticipation of his return to the top tier of single-seaters, Alonso was asked by Canada SER with what he will be satisfied with in 2021. Alonso answers: "What do I settle for? I have nothing in terms of a specific position. It would be nice to get on the podium. This season, it seemed there were more possibilities than in the past for the other teams, but I am aware those podiums came because of Mercedes disasters."

Year of preparation

So where the dream of a podium for next season depends on the conditions in which the dominant teams will find themselves, Alonso looks forward to a more competitive grid for the years to come and thus more opportunities for Alpine. “The objective is clear – 2021 is a year of preparation, of integration with the team when some podiums would be fantastic.”

Alonso goes on: “But in 2022 with the change of regulation, to dream of winning and being up there again.”
