Alessandro Zanardi, the former Formula 1 driver who lost both legs and suffered another serious accident five months ago, has been transferred to another hospital.

Multiple major accidents Zanardi

The Italian drove in several racing classes after his Formula 1 career, including Indycar. In 2001, he drove in a leading position at the German Lausitzring, when he crashed heavily and another driver hit him at 320kmph.

Both of his legs had to be amputated. However, Zanardi hadn't finished racing yet, and has competed in Touring Car championships in a modified car since 2004. He then started a career in handbiking, where he was very successful and won gold at the Paralympic Games several times.

Situation stable

On 19 June 2020, he was severely injured in a truck crash during a handbike race. After this he underwent three operations on his brain and skull, and was put into a coma. Now his situation is stable enough to transfer him to a hospital in Padua, APnews.com reports. This hospital is closer to home.

It is not clear exactly how he is. His situation is stable, but that does not mean that he is doing well. Doctors say that he probably suffered (permanent) brain damage.
