The battles in midfield are a joy to watch in Formula 1 and it's not surprising that sporting director Ross Brawn hopes that also the top will come so close together. It remains to be seen whether that will happen.

Will the budget cap work in F1?

''My dream is of course that with the new rules in the next two years, there will also be such exciting battles at the front. With the budgetcap and the new car regulations we hope to achieve that already'', says Ross Brawn in his column for Formula1.com. However, at the moment it's Mercedes that has pulled a bizarre gap to the competition.

''At the moment the teams with the biggest budgets are winning in Formula 1. I don't want to pretend that their performance is worth nothing, they are doing a fantastic job, but they are doing it with much more budget than their competition", says Brawn about the top teams such as Mercedes, Red Bull Racing and Ferrari.

Brawn dreams of excitement

With a budget cap of 145 million dollars, the lead of the top teams must be limited. McLaren and Renault, as constructors, can therefore spend the budgets that the top teams are allowed to spend and the smaller teams see the gap to the top narrowed. What we now see in the midfield, should therefore also be happening at the front of the field.

''The goal of the budget cap is to have more cars in 2022 that can compete for victory. That way the drivers can show their talent more. The battle in midfield during the UK Grand Prix was a great example of this and I'm already looking forward to the moment we have that at the front of the field," concluded Brawn.
